Christmas is around the corner. Personally I love this time of year, I honestly do..
This blog, as I get into may sound like i'm contradicting myself but it's important to realise a few things this time of year.
Many people get so mixed up with what they want to do that Christmas passes by and they didn't enjoy a single second of it..
Know what that leads to ....
Yep, next year those people will be the guys saying, I HATE Christmas
Put it this way
Who plans to workout? Manage their Nutrition? It is a tough time of year for the person who is working hard to improve their composition and fitness. A lot of work can be undone very quickly without doing some planning and preparation to tackle the festive season head on, but don't go overboard guys... seriously.
Add in the fact that tonnes of people seem to have flu symptoms of some nasty virus.. Even my own house was wiped for a week..
I had a bug, then Jen got it and ended up in A&E for about 18 hours (torture) and Ciara couldn't keep her food down either...
When it comes to Christmas I really think people need to chill out and enjoy it.
I see gyms opening up on christmas day this year, like WTF!!
Just know that
Fitness is a journey, a lifestyle and your mission in life, but not everyone is on your bus. This year, pretend you are normal, dress up, buy a few gym passes for the relatives and just eat the nice food.
Stop taking selfies of dinner plates full of broccolli, there isn't 3 people in the country interested in it...
You still won't destroy all the hard work you did this year if you unwind a bit
And i'll leave you with this
Words of Wisdom from Thom Plummer - (A Fitness Industry Godfather)
If you have children of a Christmas age where everything is possible through magic, cookies and hot chocolate, don’t forget you were once that child and a four year old cuddled in a blanket listening to a story protected by parents in front of fireplace is a memory for a life time.
Be present this year at Christmas. Be peaceful with the ones you love, be committed to creating magic with children who will remember those hours until the day they die, and then for an eternity.
Bring back the magic this Christmas. Give your children the most precious gift there is in life, which is your time, your devotion and your undivided attention for a few hours. Maybe the magic you believed in so long ago is still possible, but only you can make it happen for your children…. and maybe for yourself.
Have you been working out for a while and still not getting the results you want?
Maybe struggling to get off your ass and do a bit of exercise, even though you’re fed up of how you look and feel right now?
Since I started training people and from a lifetime of involvement with sports teams, I can tell you that it is almost always the same story.
Lot’s of experience and observation of people at every level of their fitness journey always points back to the same thing that is holding people back.
Can you guess what it is?
It isn’t the wrong training program or diet plan.
It isn’t not people to train with, nor that niggly shoulder injury.
It’s always a Mindset problem. Always.
The Right Mindset To Change Your Body -
I believe that all other problems stem from either the wrong mindset, or incorrect beliefs.
It’s rare that someone simply doesn’t know what to do. Especially nowadays with the internet. People have too much information. More commonly, we have too many conflicting ideas.
We seem to worry about small insignificant stuff, while missing the big picture.
Most people know too much, and do too little.
If we stuck with one person’s ideas for a sustained period and gave our all, instead of program hopping and looking for the next shiny object…
If we stopped switching between “bulking” and “cutting” on a bi-weekly basis, dependent on how many abs we see in the mirror or some off-hand comment someone made about you looking fat/skinny this week…
Then we would all be a lot better off. But I digress.
My friend Jason Kane summed up the fatloss process as simple as I've ever herd it described when he spoke to a group of coaches recently
To achieve fatloss you do this
Eat a little less and sweat 3 or 4 times a week!!! Thats It....
And he is right.. In a nutshell thats all it is
So why do we struggle to do that??
To achieve more in our body, we need to think better. We need to fix our mindset.
What does mindset even mean?
I use mindset in the broad definition of encompassing the way that you think.
To change your mindset is to change your thinking.
Mindset – in my definition – is applied psychology.
I believe that our thoughts and beliefs are the only limiting factor we face.
Even if you have a dumb goal like you want to play Rugby for Ireland, despite being a sedentary 35 year old… that is still a thinking problem.
Your goal is all but impossible – incorrect thinking – wrong mindset.
You could rattle off a million reasons like;
“You’re too old”.
“You don’t have the genetic potential”.
“You don’t have 10-15 years of dedicated training under your belt”.
They’re all secondary to the fact that it’s a stupid goal, aka; a thinking problem.
Entertaining the idea of wanting something that is impossible is a faulty thinking pattern… because it is impossible!
What I’m getting at here is that the thinking – the mindset – underpins everything else. Nothing happens in the physical world that hasn’t first been thought of in your mind.
Saying we want to achieve something we don’t really care about is a thinking problem too. Maybe you’ve felt like you should do something for years – but never committed to doing what it takes?
Getting in shape is simple (but not easy)
All that you need to succeed in the fitness game is a well laid out plan.
You probably know what to do without me telling you. At least the basics.
Sure, there’s advanced stuff that’s useful to know, but doing the basics well, stacks all of the odds in your favour. Much of this is common sense stuff.
People have been getting in great shape for a long time. All you have to do is follow the plan that has been laid out by many people over history.
Ignore the latest Instagram fad and do what worked for people 10, 30, 50 years ago.
It’s a fairly simple system to follow. The human body hasn’t changed in a long time, and you could safely ignore everything that has been said on the topic in the last 50 years and be no worse off.
The real sticking point in all of this is in the implementation – the doing.
Like I said; simple, but not easy.
If it was easy, everyone would be in great shape. If you work with other people then just look around you right now and you’ll probably see that is evidently not true.
Look around your average gym and it still isn’t true!
So we know what to do…
(I promise, you do know what to do. Don’t worry, I’m gonna tell you anyway, to make sure, but I’m confident 10/10 people know what to do. You just don’t have confidence in that knowledge, because you’ve never been able to action it).
We know what to do…
But we don’t do it.
That is the disconnect.
All people, at all stages of their training life know what they need to do to go to the next level. Some people are simply not willing to do what is required to get to the next level and are ok with that.
But most people can’t get to the next level…
Even though they know what is required and they want to do it.
Let me tell you what you need to do. Then I’ll explain how to get your head straight and get yourself into the right mindset to change your body.
Here’s exactly what you need to do to get in the right mindset to lose weight
This is what it’s going to take to move the needle on your body and lose fat…
You’re going to feel hungry at times
You’re going to crave things sometimes
You’re going to feel weak or tired
Your joints might get a bit sore, you won’t recover from training as well
You will have to track what you’re eating and be very conscious of it
You need to lay back / knock off alcohol
You will choose what to eat based on your diet first, tastes second
You might have to forego social occasions
Sometimes you’ll be in a bad mood
You will ‘cheat’ on your diet at some point and need to bounce back from that
That’s all assuming you’re already training and eating right. If you’re not, then following a weight loss plan will actually leave you feeling better.
Can you deal with that?
Is losing weight worth it?
I’m not trying to put you off. I’m telling you the reality. You need to accept reality. If you’re not prepared to do what you need to do, don’t waste the time trying.
If you are prepared, great!
Every fitness company in the world wants to tell you how EASY it all is with their system.
Bullshit. It’s hard work. Part of the right mindset is accurate thinking – knowing what it is going to take to achieve your goals .
Just calling it as I see it...
Recently we had some massive results with clients like Brendan below
Yes the Program is good, Yes it's laid out well but without a mindset to achieve that level of result it wouldn't be possible...
A Goal without a Plan and Mindset to achieve, is just a wish!
